8 mil safety and security film for a Cochrane new build

This Cochrane new-build, completed in May 2026, had basement slider windows at grade level, a full-glass front entry door, and a rear garden door with prairie-grid muntins. The homeowners wanted glazing that would hold together under forced entry or a hard impact without changing the look of the new construction.

Project challenge

The most exposed glass in a typical new build is at the basement at ground level and at the entry doors. Both are easy to reach and both can be defeated quickly with a brick or pry tool. The owners wanted the protection of an attack-rated film without dark tint or visible film edges in their new home.

Installed solution

An optically clear 8 mil safety and security film was bonded to each pane: both basement slider windows, the full-glass front entry door, and the rear door with prairie grid. The film keeps shattered glass attached to itself and to the frame, so even when a pane is hit hard it stays in place long enough to slow or stop entry.

Glass review

New-build entry doors and basement sliders are usually single tempered or double IGU. 8 mil safety film adds tear and impact resistance without changing the optical look of either build.

Installation focus

The focus was edge-to-edge coverage on every pane, clean cuts around door hardware, and dust-free wet-mount so the finished film reads as clear glass in a new home.

Result

Every accessible ground-level pane is now film-bonded. A break-in attempt has to defeat the film as well as the glass, which slows entry and gives time for the alarm and the homeowner to respond.

Planning Note

What to check before safety film on a new build

Safety and security film performance depends on film thickness, anchoring at the frame, and the glass type underneath. A few items confirm whether the install will perform as expected.

Pick the right mil

8 mil is a strong baseline for residential entry doors and basement glazing. Higher mil ratings exist for storefront and bomb-mitigation work.

Anchor the frame

For full attack rating, film should be paired with a structural sealant or frame attachment system at the perimeter.

Confirm tempered glass

Tempered glass breaks into pebbles. Safety film holds those pebbles in a sheet so the opening is not cleared in one strike.
