The grasscloth look, without the grasscloth upkeep

Heather M.’s Huntington Hills living room is papered in Crown Wallcoverings LUXE Fusion Plain Teal, pattern M1768: a textured paper wallpaper with a grasscloth-look horizontal weave in teal and gold. It gives the room the woven texture people want from grasscloth, and because it is a washable paper rather than natural fibre, it does not stain at a touch or show the colour shifts real grasscloth is known for.

Our October 13 estimate planned to strip and repaper a 9.5 ft × 9 ft wall, paper the walls around the bay windows, and come back a second time so the stripped wall could dry before priming. On site on October 19, Alla found a better route: the problem on that wall was old glue residue, not failed paper. She cleaned the residue off and saved the existing wallpaper, so the wall never had to be stripped and replaced.

Project challenge

A wall with old adhesive on it usually gets one answer: strip everything, let it dry, prime, and hang new paper. That costs a second visit and the wallpaper the client already liked. The question on this wall was whether the residue could come off without damaging the textured paper underneath.

What we did instead

Alla worked the glue residue off the existing wallpaper by hand, so the paper stayed on the wall and the strip-and-replace was not needed. That kept the client’s existing paper, dropped a step from the plan and lowered the cost of the job. The installation was completed the same visit, and Heather chose to finish the last section herself.

The room and the roll it came from

Saved, not stripped

Cleaning the old glue residue kept the existing wallpaper on a 9.5 ft × 9 ft wall instead of tearing it off and starting over.

One visit

The estimate allowed two visits so a stripped wall could dry before priming. Saving the paper took that drying step out of the plan.

Grasscloth look, washable paper

Fusion Plain Teal gives a woven grasscloth texture on a washable paper, so a splash or a fingerprint wipes off instead of staining fibre.

Real grasscloth or the grasscloth look?

Natural grasscloth is woven from plant fibre on a paper backing: rich, but it stains with water, shows every seam and varies in colour from panel to panel. A grasscloth-look paper such as Fusion Plain Teal prints and embosses that texture onto a washable sheet. For a busy living room with plants and pets, the look-alike is often the more practical choice. We install both; see grasscloth wallpaper installation for how we handle real fibre.
