What Is Grasscloth?
Grasscloth is a natural wallcovering made from plant fibers such as arrowroot, jute, sisal, or seagrass woven onto a backing. It is valued for texture, depth, and natural variation, which is also why it needs more planning than standard printed wallpaper.
The goal is a controlled, attractive installation with realistic expectations. Grasscloth is not meant to look like a perfectly flat printed vinyl; visible panel variation and natural seams are part of the material.
Why Grasscloth Is Different
- Adhesive control matters. Paste on the face can stain natural fibers, so staging, handling, and clean tools are critical.
- Natural shading is expected. Rolls and panels can shift in tone, especially under side light.
- Seams need planning. Layout, lighting direction, corners, and panel sequence should be discussed before cutting begins.
- Wall prep matters. Texture, patches, glossy paint, and poor primer can affect adhesion and telegraph through the finished surface.
Where Grasscloth Works Well
Calgary homeowners and designers often use grasscloth in dining rooms, bedrooms, offices, powder rooms, and feature walls where texture is part of the design intent.
Wet rooms, rough walls, heavy-use commercial spaces, and tight corners need a more careful material review before the project is approved.
