Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at info@wallstyleinnovations.ca if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Answer: Yes, but the preparation is the most important step. Many Calgary homes have textured walls, which will show bumps through new wallpaper. We provide a professional skim-coating service to smooth your walls to a "Level 5" finish before installation. For less aggressive textures, we may recommend a heavy-duty liner paper to create a perfectly flat "canvas" for your luxury wallcovering.

Answer: Ideally, wallpaper should be one of the final steps. We recommend installing it after your flooring and baseboards are in place. This allows us to trim the paper precisely against the top of the baseboard for a perfectly clean edge. However, all messy construction (sanding, tiling, painting) should be completed and the room should be dust-free before we arrive.

Answer: In some cases, yes. If you are choosing a dark or moody floral pattern, we often recommend priming or painting the wall a matching dark shade first. This ensures that if the seams ever "breath" slightly due to home settling, the white drywall won't peek through the gaps.

Answer: Calculating rolls is more complex than simple math because of the pattern repeat. A large 30" floral repeat results in more waste than a simple texture. We recommend texting or emailing us your wall measurements and a link to the paper you love. We will calculate the exact yardage or rolls needed to ensure you don't run short (which can be a disaster if the "dye lot" changes).

Answer: Absolutely! Wallpaper in a powder room is a classic design "wow" factor. For full bathrooms with showers, we recommend non-woven or vinyl-backed papers that handle humidity better. The key is using a specialized mold-resistant adhesive and ensuring the room has proper ventilation to prevent the edges from lifting over time.

Answer: Residential wallpaper is typically 21–27 inches wide and focuses on aesthetics. Commercial Type II Vinyl is 54 inches wide, fire-rated, and engineered to withstand high-traffic areas like office hallways or hotels. We are certified to install both, utilizing clay-based adhesives for heavy-duty commercial vinyl to ensure it meets building codes and remains scrubbable for years.

Answer: Authentic grasscloth is a natural product made of hand-woven fibers. Unlike standard paper, you cannot get paste on the front of grasscloth, or it will stain permanently. It also has inherent "shading" (color variations between rolls). We use specialized double-cutting techniques and clay-based adhesives to ensure your grasscloth looks like a curated, high-end texture rather than a series of mismatched panels.

Answer: Yes, ceiling installations are a signature of luxury design. However, gravity is the enemy here. We use specialized high-tack adhesives and a two-person team to ensure the paper is perfectly bonded. We generally recommend lighter-weight non-woven materials for ceilings rather than heavy vinyls to ensure long-term "staying power."

Answer: Not if it’s done right. The "nightmare" stories of removal usually involve paper applied directly to raw drywall. We always apply a professional-grade primer (like Roman PRO-977) first. This creates a barrier that allows the adhesive to bond to the primer, not the drywall, making future removal a simple "strip and wipe" process without any damage to your home.

Answer: This depends on the material. Vinyl and non-woven papers can usually be gently wiped with a damp, soft cloth and mild soap. Natural fibers (Silk, Grasscloth, Mica) should only be dusted or vacuumed with a soft brush attachment. We always leave you with a "care card" specific to the material we installed so you know exactly how to maintain your investment.

Answer: In many cases, yes. If you have a tear or a "pet accident," we can often perform a surgical patch. By taking a scrap piece from your original installation and "double-cutting" it over the damaged area, we can often make the repair virtually invisible. This is why we always recommend keeping any leftover scraps after our visit!

Answer: Most windows are the weakest point of a home. Security Window Film is a high-tensile, multi-layer barrier that holds shattered glass together. Even if a burglar hits the glass with a hammer, the film keeps the pane in the frame, delaying entry and often deterring the intruder entirely. It’s an "invisible shield" for your peace of mind.

Answer: Not at all. Modern Solar Control Films are designed to be virtually invisible while still blocking 99% of harmful UV rays. This protects your expensive hardwood floors and furniture from fading and reduces heat gain in the summer without sacrificing your natural light or Calgary views.

Answer: Wallpaper is an expensive investment. DIY mistakes—like misaligned patterns, visible seams, or "stretching" the paper—can actually cost you more in wasted rolls than the price of a professional. We bring laser-level precision, specialized tools, and a decade of experience to ensure your luxury paper looks exactly like it did in the showroom.

Answer: If you’ve just moved into a new build, your paint is still "outgassing." We recommend waiting at least 30 days after the final coat of paint before we install wallpaper. This ensures the adhesive bonds perfectly and prevents bubbles from forming as the paint fully cures.

Answer: Peel-and-stick (self-adhesive) wallpaper is a popular DIY choice, but from a professional installation standpoint, it behaves very differently than traditional "paste-the-wall" paper. Here is the professional "truth" you should know before buying:

  • The Stretch Factor: Traditional paper allows us to slide the material into place using wet paste. Peel-and-stick is essentially a giant sticker; if it is pulled too hard to align a pattern, the vinyl stretches. Over the following days, the material "remembers" its original shape and shrinks back, which can cause visible gaps at the seams.
  • Wall Compatibility: These adhesives require a very smooth surface. They often struggle to bond with modern "scrubbable" or low-VOC latex paints.
  • The Verdict: While we certainly install peel-and-stick, we recommend Traditional Wallpaper for a truly high-end, seamless finish—especially on large feature walls. Traditional paper offers better longevity and a more sophisticated texture that doesn't "bubble" over time.

Answer: Congratulations on your new home! A new build is an ideal "blank canvas," but timing and preparation are critical to ensure your investment lasts:

  1. The 4-Week Rule: New paint needs at least 30 days to "outgas." If you apply wallpaper (especially peel-and-stick vinyl) too soon, the gases escaping the curing paint can cause bubbles to form under the paper.
  2. Specialized Priming: Builders often use flat, porous paint. To ensure a perfect bond and to make sure the wallpaper can be removed years from now without damaging the drywall, we apply a professional-grade primer (like Roman ECO-988) before installation.

Settling: We recommend waiting until you have possession and the home's climate control is active, as wallpaper performs best in a stable, temperature-controlled environment.
